This article discusses Senator Andy Kim's defense of DEI initiatives during a town hall at Cherry Hill East High School. Kim criticized federal rollbacks on DEI programs, commended New Jersey's resistance, and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting marginalized communities.

This article looks at New Jersey's cannabis industry and how it has evolved since being legalized in 2021. Does the state fulfill its promises of advancing equity? How has it supported Black dispensary owners? To end, the article lists Black-owned dispensaries throughout New Jersey.

This article covers Curate Noir, a retail collective based in Moorestown and Camden, New Jersey. They sell products from small, BIPOC-owned businesses located in the South Jersey area. Recently, they held their third annual Women Crushing It Conference -- the conference's support for Black women vendors, attendees, and speakers is consistent with the way the founders champion Black entrepreneurs in all of their ventures.

This article details the opening of Her Lens, Her Story PhotograpHERS Exhibition, which highlights women photographers from Camden and the surrounding areas. Speaking to a packed crowd of attendees, featured artists and the exhibition team expressed their stories behind their art, and they also gave voice to women's many experiences in the United States.

This article looks at a pending New Jersey bill that would require healthcare centers to screen pregnant patients for endometriosis. It deep dives into how this bill may impact Black mothers and what work is being done throughout the Garden State to improve Black maternal health outcomes.

This article discusses the hair deserts in South Dakota and how they impact Black women. It looks at The Queen’s Crown LLC, a Black hair business located in Sioux Falls that is one of the few salons that exclusively offer Black hair styling services.

April 2024 | The Daily Princetonian

This article discusses the show "Love Type Beat," which was directed and produced by two Black women, and its immersive approach to theatermaking. Broadly, the article argues that Princeton University should better support Black theater.

September 2022 | Global Citizen 

Each summer, Global Citizen, partnered with the Reading Captains Initiative, puts out an early literacy volunteer newsletter that is posted on the Reading Captains website. This was a special edition, led by my colleague Jules Galette and I, that highlighted the Initiative's key components and could be shared at community events to help support early literacy activities in the fall. I devised content, wrote out event descriptions, provided some photographs, and designed the newsletter.

This article from reports on a community roundtable held by Senator Andy Kim in Camden's Waterfront South neighborhood, where residents expressed frustration over being excluded from the $6.7M EMR fire settlement. The residents criticized the lack of public input and transparency, urging the senator to advocate for their involvement in decisions regarding the investment and to hold city officials accountable for unmet promises.

April 2025 | Black in Jersey

This article discusses recycling facility EMR's agreement to invest $6.7 million into the city of Camden's Waterfront South area after a massive fire at the facility in February. This fire is the largest of six fires since 2016, and it forced more than 100 residents to evacuate their homes because of the toxic smoke. On April 17, 2025, Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen and city officials held a press conference, where they spoke about the investment and the goal to hold EMR accountable for the damage to the community.

This article discusses Cameron 'Cece' Jefferson, an entrepreneur and hair expert passionate about increasing access in her community. She started Cea'Mone Beauty, an at-home beauty supply shop, during the height of the pandemic, after noticing a need for hair supplies. Since then, her business has taken off and has recently relaunched, with a new website, new delivery and pickup service, and new, original products.

This article covers an open mic night in Moorestown, New Jersey, called the "SOULcial Justice Cafe." The event, led by Southern Burlington County's NAACP Chapter, celebrated past and present Black artists. It was a community gathering and therapy session.

This article explores the start of President Trump's second term and its implications. In the first week alone, he reversed many policies and issued executive orders that negatively impact marginalized communities in a significant way. The piece discusses how local communities are mobilizing and pushing back against inequity.

October 2024 | Front Runner New Jersey

This article talks about the First Baptist Church of Whitesboro, located in Cape May County, New Jersey, which is celebrating 120 years. Whitesboro is a historically all-Black town with a rich history that Middle Township has attempted to erase, by tearing down its establishments and taking land from families. The church is Whitesboro's oldest institution and is one of the few remaining. Despite efforts to erase Whitesboro's history, a strong network of people have been fighting back and doing all they can to preserve their history.

August 2023 | Midstory

This article covers East African Elementary School, the first school in the United States centered on East African cultures and languages. The school, which recently opened in September 2023, offers students in the community an education that most U.S. schools do not provide: one teaching cultures, traditions, and histories from the African diaspora.

INTERVIEWS

April 2024 | Senior Thesis, Independent Research 

My senior thesis, titled “Issa Rae’s ‘Creative Empire’: How Authenticity is Challenged by Art’s Relationship with Capitalism,” explored producer, actress, and multi-hyphenate Issa Rae's broad range of creative work. Using Rae as a case study, it discusses how Black creators can simultaneously produce "authentic" work and contribute to capitalism. In April 2024, I interviewed the artist about her brilliant show Insecure, its importance in the Black community, and her intentions behind her work. The transcript and more details are linked here.

Interview with Aunjanue Ellis

November 2020

Actress, producer, and activist Aunjanue Ellis has accomplished notable work both on screen and on the front line, fighting against racism and exclusion. In this interview, we discuss the power and importance of activism, as well as her own work for years to take down the racist Mississippi state flag, which incorporated the Confederate battle flag in its design.

June 2022 | Global Citizen

In collaboration with the Reading Captains Initiative, Global Citizen hosts summer events to provide families with young children in Philadelphia with resources on literacy. Nikki Johnson, former Miss Pennsylvania Universe, attended one of the events, and afterwards, I interviewed her on her struggle with homelessness and how being an avid reader helped her succeed.
